One night in port and the northern lights in Alta

A ship that stays in Alta into the evening gives you one night to look for the aurora. Several tours pick up at the harbor, and two promise to get you back on board. Match the tour length to your all-aboard time.

When your ship calls at Alta

Cruise ships call at Alta's harbor, known as Alta Havn. The aurora tours all start in the evening, so they only fit a call that keeps the ship in port well after dark.

Before you look at any tour, find your ship's all-aboard time. Every plan on this page starts from that one number, and the tours below last between 3.5 and 6 hours.

Work backward from it. Allow for the drive back on snowy roads and a margin for a guide who lingers under a good sky, then see which tours still fit.

The sky has to cooperate as well. No tour can promise the lights, and a single evening in port leaves no second try if the clouds roll in. Our page on what happens on a cloudy night explains how each tour copes.

Pickup in front of the harbor building

Alta Adventure's small-group hunt, from ~$257, lets cruise guests choose Alta Havn as their pickup point. The guide waits with a minibus in front of the blue building signed Alta Havn.

The tour lasts about 4 hours, and the group is normally back in Alta just after midnight. It drives to wherever the sky looks clearest, which can mean a long way, so it fits only a ship that sails late.

Guests must be 12 or older, and the group stops at 13. It holds 4.6 from 150+ reviews on GetYourGuide and lends warm suits and boots, which saves packing heavy gear in a cabin.

The quad tour with a Back-to-Ship Guarantee

Finnmark Adventure's quad hunt, from ~$235, picks up from the harbor as well as from hotels. Its listing offers a Back-to-Ship Guarantee for cruise guests and says the tour is planned around tender times.

The evening runs 5 hours. A 30-minute drive takes you to the village of Kviby, where you change into warm overalls and get a safety briefing before riding along the coast behind an English-speaking guide.

A ride planned around the ship

Harbor pickup, a Back-to-Ship Guarantee on the listing, and up to 16 riders sharing quads two by two. Viator rates it 4.8 from 33 reviews, GetYourGuide 4.6 from 30. From ~$235.

The drawback is the cold. You sit behind handlebars in the wind off the fjord, and the riding area is fixed, so the guide cannot drive off to find a clear sky.

Each quad's driver needs a car licence, and every guest must be 9 or older. One Viator reviewer describes coffee and cookies at a fjord-side stop while photographing the lights, which is the evening at its best.

Karlsøy and the long night

Amazing Aurora by Karlsøy, from ~$129, is the cheapest tour on this site and includes a campfire plus free professional photos of every guest. It can run up to 6 hours, and the route depends on the night.

A guide explains the solar wind and the Kp index by the fire, which fills the time well if the sky stays closed. Even so, six hours is a lot to spend on a single port call.

The listing asks you to say in advance if you must be back by a set time. For a cruise guest that message is essential, so send it when you book and remind the guide of your all-aboard time.

Bring a passport or ID card, which the listing asks for. Up to 45 guests share the bus with two guides, so it suits a long port call better than a tight one.

Booking through the ship or on your own

The ship's excursion desk often sells an aurora evening of its own. Its usual advantage is that the ship waits if a ship-run tour comes back late, while a tour you book yourself carries that risk unless its listing says otherwise.

Booking on your own opens up the full choice, from a minibus hunt to a quad on the coast. Our price comparison lists every tour's price per person, and our guide to the tour types explains how they differ.

Cruise guests do book Alta's activity tours themselves, and reviews mention it. If you go that way, pick a tour with harbor pickup and allow a wide margin before all-aboard.

Finnmark Adventure's Northern Lights Bus, from ~$149, also lists a Back-to-Ship Guarantee and lasts 3.5 hours, the shortest evening here. The drawback is the crowd, with up to 53 on a heated bus, and a score of 4.4 from 53 reviews.

What to bring off the ship

A cabin wardrobe is rarely built for an hour at a dark stop in Finnmark, where clear nights inland can drop far below freezing. Pack these before you leave the ship.

  • Your driving licence, if you plan to drive a quad or a snowmobile
  • A passport or ID card, which the Karlsøy bus asks for
  • Warm layers, a hat over the ears and mittens, as set out in our clothing guide
  • A charged phone in an inside pocket, with our camera tips read beforehand
  • Your all-aboard time and the ship's port agent number written on paper

Æventyr's snowmobile tour (from ~$284) picks up in Alta and meets at Markedsgata 6. Ask the operator whether its pickup covers the harbor before you book.

If your ship visits Alta in autumn, the snow tours may not be running yet. Our month-by-month guide shows what each part of the dark season offers.

Questions from the gangway

Can cruise passengers do a northern lights tour in Alta?

Yes, if the ship stays in port into the evening. Alta Adventure and Finnmark Adventure both pick up at the harbor, and Finnmark Adventure lists a Back-to-Ship Guarantee for its quad tour and its bus tour.

Where does the Alta Adventure guide meet cruise guests?

At Alta Havn, if you pick it as your pickup point when booking. Look for the minibus outside the blue Alta Havn building.

Will I get back to the ship in time?

Check your all-aboard time against the tour length first. Finnmark Adventure's quad and bus tours list a Back-to-Ship Guarantee. Karlsøy wants to hear ahead of time when you need to be back.

Should I book the aurora tour through the cruise line?

A ship-sold tour usually means the ship waits if the tour runs late. Booking on your own gives you more choice of tour, so pick one with harbor pickup and leave a wide margin.

Do I need my driving licence for an Alta aurora tour?

Only if you want to drive a quad or snowmobile, since drivers need a valid car licence. Passengers ride without one. The minibus and bus tours need no licence at all.
